Putting the CARE in CAREGivers: Meet 3 Home Instead Senior Care CAREGivers Who Go the Extra Mile

Barb Hoffman, Susan Boyko, and Coleen Handforth didn't grow up thinking they would be Home Instead Senior Care CAREGivers when they grew up. In fact, all three of these women had careers prior to joining their local Home Instead franchise office.

Barb Hoffman's visits to her husband's grandmother in the nursing home a few times a week helped her discover just how much she enjoyed being around seniors. After working in retail for more than 30 years, she realized she needed a change and when she noticed an advertisement for CAREGivers for her local franchise office, she decided to give it a try. More than 8 years later, Barb has earned her CNA license and has gotten experience working in an assisted living facility. But for her, the one-on-one care Home Instead is able to provide is key to her professional happiness and makes her a star in the caregiving industry.

Susan Boyko has been a CAREGiver for more than a decade, but she started her career performing various jobs at the Heath Sciences Centre, the largest hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. After caring for her husband's father who was legally blind, Susan discovered her love for caregiving and applied for a job with her local Home Instead Senior Care franchise office in 2011. "Everybody is memorable; everybody is unique; everybody is interesting. I took away something special from each one of my clients," says Susan, perfectly capturing what makes her a superstar CAREGiver.

Coleen Handforth has been a stay-at-home mom, a teacher, a waitress, and an assistant manager of a retail store, but her last career change occurred when her father needed help during the final years of his life. When Coleen needed a bit of time off from being a caregiver to her dad, a hospice worker suggested she contact Home Instead for respite. Through that experience, Coleen realized Home Instead is not only enhancing the lives of seniors, but their families as well. After her father passed away, Coleen saw an advertisement for her local Home Instead Senior Care franchise and applied to be a CAREGiver. She currently works with four clients, each requiring different types of care.

Each of these CAREGivers came to caregiving from different paths but each has found the profession that allows them to do what they love and give back to the world. The compassion and caring our CAREGivers bring to everything they do is what makes Home Instead Senior Care a world leader in providing at home care that allows seniors to stay in their homes longer. Isn't it time for you to find the CAREGivers who will make your business a success while providing much needed care to the seniors living in your territory?
