A Day in the Life of a New Franchise Owner

Day in the life of owner

Should I start a new business or acquire an existing one? Is franchising right for me? Can I afford my entrepreneurial dream?

By this point you’ve likely read up – or gone through in your head – just about every scenario and question there is about home care ownership. And while we’d be lying if we said there probably weren’t more to think about, we’ve found that the most successful Home Instead franchisees have been those who are continually asking the right questions and learning something new every single day.

To give you some perspective on Home Instead franchise ownership, we asked Noel Morris to share some of his experiences a year-and-a-half after starting his franchise.

First of all, what did you do before purchasing a home care business?

I had a successful career in the banking industry holding a variety of c-level positions. A friend was ready to sell his Home Instead franchise and offered it to me because he felt he could trust me to manage it the right way.

What does a typical day look like?

What I love to do is lead and provide strategic direction. I’m always looking ahead months or years ahead. My wife and staff are great about taking my crazy ideas and figuring out how they might work. Part of my day is what I call ‘incubation time’ – thinking about business, how to lead and providing the best care we can.

How do you split your business time?

I spend a third on operations, a third on outside PR activities, and a third on strategic direction.

Work/life balance?

I’m very satisfied with it. My wife and I both agree on that. We’re blessed to have such great flexibility.

What’s most rewarding?

I feel good about the work we do as an organization. I think we truly make a difference in the lives of our clients and their families. I think we make a difference in the lives of our clients and their families, too. That’s what we strive for. We’ve also been able to grow our business, so we have had financial rewards as well.

What is the role of Home Office support?

I couldn’t have done anything without them. They are terrific. Someone from the Home Office was assigned to us and walked us through the transition process. They have a game plan, and really, it was up to us to follow it.

Biggest challenge of purchasing an existing home care business?

For us, it was ensuring that we came in and did things the right way to build trust with our staff, Care Pros, and our client base. Almost a year and half later, we’ve grown close to staff and it’s a great team environment.
